Longhorns Defeat UNT, Look Towards Ohio State

All summer, anyone who paid any attention to Texas football looked immediately past the first game of the season and started talking about the Longhorns' anticipated matchup against Ohio State.

Now the team can concentrate on that game as well.

The defending national champions showed up strong, defeating the North Texas Mean Green 56-7 Saturday in Austin. The win puts Texas at 1-0 and extends their winning streak, currently the nation's longest, to 21 games.

It also allowed the #2 ranked Longhorns to start preparing to what many believe will be the biggest game of the entire season: their matchup next Saturday against the number one ranked team in the nation, the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Texas dominated the Mean Green all over the field Saturday. Texas' offense wreaked havoc on the Mean Green defense, gaining 409 total yards and converting 30 first downs. The defense also contributed to making the game a laugher, giving up just 54 total yards to the overmatched North Texas Offense.

Saturday's game also saw the debut of Texas' starting quarterback for the 2006 season: redshirt freshman Colt McCoy.

McCoy impressed Saturday afternoon, throwing a 60 yard touchdown pass on the third play of the game to Limas Sweed. He would go on to throw tow more touchdown passes and running for another. McCoy would end up going 12 of 17 for 177 yards, and while a few mistakes were made, definitely did not look like a freshman making his first start, instead looking capable of delivering the ball to the Longhorns' talented receivers.

Sweed also had a banner day for the 'Horns, catching 5 balls for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Texas did not just throw all over the Mean Green, however. The Longhorns' rushing attack accounted for 212 yards. Jamaal Charles led the way with 77 yards on 14 carries and one touchdown. Selvin Young gained 44 yards on 12 carries with another score.

All in all, Texas passed the first test of the season with flying colors, and now the eyes of the entire nation will shift to Austin Saturday for what should be an exciting sequel to last year's matchup in Columbus, which Texas won 25-22. The winner of Saturday's game should no doubt have the inside track to the national championship.
